US tariffs on Europe take effect tomorrow, EU warns of retaliation

After weeks of promises, threats, and first measures, the moment of truth has come.

April 2, described by Donald Trump as a decisive day, is the day when United States tariffs on goods imported from the rest of the world will take effect. These tariffs will also apply to goods from Canada and Mexico, which had previously received a one-month reprieve. They will also affect countries called by the US administration the "dirty fifteen", which have a large trade surplus with the US. But the tariffs will also apply to all other countries, including the European Union and Italy.

On April 3, 25% tariffs on cars and parts made outside the US will take effect. The US administration has not yet provided specific details on the new trade measures. President Trump himself will address the nation in a globally televised address, on a day that, according to a White House spokeswoman, is "one of the most important in modern American history."

US Tariffs: Trump's Announcement

Trump will make the official announcement of the tariffs on Wednesday, April 2, at an event in the White House Rose Garden under the motto “Make America Wealthy Again,” inspired by his famous MAGA (Make America Great Again) slogan. Trump has called the day “America’s Liberation Day.” The speech will be held at 4 p.m. in Washington (10 p.m. in Europe).

White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said no further details on the tariffs would be released until they are officially announced. When asked if the administration would review the trade strategy if it didn’t work, she said: “We won’t be wrong. It will work. The president has a great team of advisers who have been working on these issues for decades. We are focused on restoring America’s golden age and strengthening it as an industrial superpower.”

She added that Trump "is always open to negotiations," but his main goal is to "right the wrongs of the past and ensure that American workers have a fair market."

How will tariffs affect from April 2nd?

From statements so far, it is expected that Trump will announce the immediate entry into force of customs tariffs on goods imported into the US.

These fees will include:

25% tariff on cars and spare parts manufactured outside the US.

Reciprocal customs tariffs, that is, adjusted for each country depending on the trade barriers it has imposed on American goods.

Tariffs on all goods imported from the EU and other countries, including a general 20% tariff on all products.

The European Union is one of the blocs that will be most affected by these tariffs, as it is one of the largest trading partners of the US. According to the Wall Street Journal, Trump has promised that these tariffs "will be milder than those imposed on the US in recent decades", but it is expected that the affected countries, including the EU, will respond with reciprocal trade measures. /La Repubblica
