The architectural studio "OMA" has been announced the winner of the international competition for the architectural project idea for the revival of the "Selman Stërmasi" stadium.
The head of the international jury, Amanda Levete, announced the company as the winner of this international competition, while the final phase was attended by five finalist teams who presented to the jury the architectural concepts for a completely new stadium, according to UEFA standards, category IV, which will turn that area into a new center of Tirana.
"I congratulate the city of Tirana because the culture of architecture competitions in Albania has now become important. I don't know how lucky you are that all this culture and desire for architecture is supported by the government and the entire city ," she said.
"The different approaches you have have caused us to have many questions and concerns about how a stadium can be successfully integrated into the entire city," said Levete, while also adding some suggestions on the project that is expected to be implemented by the "Oma" architectural studio.
"The jury has some recommendations that they would like to see implemented in the completed project to refine the shape of the facades both for commercial interests and for those of the stadium ," she noted, suggesting that one of the buildings on the site be less of a building, and more in the shape of a clock tower or an obelisk.
"We were not very convinced about public activity on the terrace and we suggest that the use of these spaces be done with solar energy ," Levete said.
Project details
During the presentation of the project idea, the representative of the companies that took first place emphasized that the project seeks to preserve the community element that this area has today.
"The stadium was in the background, but it does not dominate and we believe that the sense of community, even when revitalized, should remain. There are 110 thousand meters of development. Next to the stadium, we want to build an urban environment where people can stay 24 hours a day.
"The platform with larger volumes that will rise towards the terrace part of the stadium will create 10 thousand meters of public space. We will increase the space and we will have the opportunity for the square to be used during matches," he said.
There are four towers, the tallest of which is 105 meters and dedicated to housing. The spaces include 30 thousand m2 of residential space, 11.9 thousand hotel, 16,700 offices, 15,700 sports, and 29,700 m2 of retail.
