Cheap prices, foreigners and immigrants flock to Albania for plastic surgery

For years, private surgical intervention clinics do not know the word crisis. The demand for plastic interventions continues to be high even in 2022, according to the main operators in the country.

The market is expanding, due to the increase in the number of clinics and hospitals that perform aesthetic surgical interventions.

In Albania, women are the ones driving the high demand for surgical procedures, with breast remodeling and body fat removal being among the most requested operations. In men, the highest demand is for rhinoplasty.

Like the global trend, even in Albania, surgical interventions are most requested by the age group from 18 to 34 years old.

In Albania, plastic surgeries are mainly performed by foreign nationals who, for some clinics, account for up to 60% of the demand and Albanian immigrants, due to the favorable prices offered.

Spain ranks first in the world for the highest number of foreign patients seeking surgical intervention, followed by the US and Brazil, according to data from the International Society of Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery (ISAPS).

Private plastic surgery clinics had a boom in demand even in 2020, after the reopening of the economy from the March-May quarantine.

The demand was high, especially for the placement of the gastric balloon, which increased by up to 15% according to market operators. There was also a high flow of demand for body fat removal, nose reshaping and hair transplant.

In the summer of 2020, 90% of plastic surgeries were performed by locals and 10% by foreign nationals or immigrants, due to the inability to move due to the restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Cheaper prices than foreign countries have increased demand

The main reason why foreigners choose Albania for plastic surgery, according to Dr. Lida Hoxha, is the low price, adding to the increase in service standards. The most popular clinics in Albania employ a large number of doctors from Italy and Turkey.

Cheaper prices than other countries remain the main reason for the increase in demand for rhinoplasty operations.

"Medical tourism in the country is reaching the levels of Turkey. The medical experience of Albanian clinics and the very good results of surgical interventions is another reason why foreigners choose Albania".

The most frequent interventions

The most frequent surgical procedures worldwide remained the same during 2021, according to data from the International Society of Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery (ISAPS).

Breast augmentation accounted for 16% of all procedures, liposuction (fat removal) 15.1%, eyelid surgery 12.1%, rhinoplasty 8.4% and abdominoplasty (tummy reshaping) 7.6%.

The Association's study analyzes data for the 10 countries with the largest number of surgical interventions in the world, such as: USA, Brazil, Germany, Japan, Turkey, Mexico, Argentina, Italy, Russia and India.

In women, of the 5.2 million interventions performed in 2020, about 30% of them were for the breast, 20% were liposuction, 19% eyelid surgery, 17% rhinoplasty and 14% abdominoplasty.

According to the ISAPS study, 43.3% of women claimed that the reason for the intervention was cosmetic, 18.1% of them had an intervention for asymmetry and the rest, for other reasons.

Worldwide, the most common surgical procedures in men continued to be eyelid surgery, accounting for 26% of total interventions, liposuction accounting for 23%, male gynecomastia 22%, rhinoplasty 21% and ear surgery, 8%.

The approach is the same in Albania. Breast augmentation, removal of excess fat, or as it is known in medical language, liposuction, and rhinoplasty remain among the most requested surgical interventions.

For 2020, one of the most used services in plastic surgery clinics was gastric balloon placement, due to the fear of obese people from Covid-19 infections.

The most plasticized age group

As in the 10 most famous countries in the world for the high number of aesthetic interventions, in Albania, surprisingly, it is young people who perform the most plastic surgeries.

Looking at the age distribution for different procedures, according to the ISAPS study, the 19-34 age group made up the highest percentage of those undergoing rhinoplasty (67.9%) while the 35-50 year olds made up the majority for balloon procedures. stomach (50.2%).

The trend is the same in Albania.

Plastic surgery is evolving along the lines of medical tourism

The high flow of demand from foreign citizens has led many private clinics in the country to develop their business in the medical tourism model.

The price for nose remodeling in Albania is up to 50% cheaper than in Europe. For a simple nose job, the price ranges from 1,600 to 1,800 euros, while in Greece, this type of surgery costs 3,300 to 3,500 euros.

"For this year, 30% of the demand is occupied by operations from foreign citizens who want to redo the intervention they did before in a foreign clinic.

Abroad, the operation costs from 10,000, 12,000 to 15,000 euros. It costs us 2,500 euros. Our market is cheaper in prices.” Another clinic claimed that the price of nose surgery ranged from 2,200 to 2,400 euros.

How have the prices for plastic surgery changed?

Cheap prices remain the strongest "weapon" of Albanian clinics to absorb patients who live abroad. This has caused some clinics to keep prices unchanged for years, even though this year they are facing increased costs due to the increase in medical supplies.

In 2020, after the reopening of the economy, the strategy followed by private clinics favored people, in order not to feel the effects of Covid-19, reducing prices by 10 to 25%.

Demand in the world for plastic surgery

For 2020, the number of plastic surgeries in the world decreased by 23% compared to 2019, due to the pandemic. Breast reshaping operations fell 10%, liposuction 10%, eyelids fell 3%, abdominoplasty (tummy reshaping) fell about 8% and rhinoplasty, 6% according to statistics from the International Society of Aesthetics and Plastic Surgery.

The USA ranks first among the 10 countries in the world for the high number of plastic surgeries. Of the total number of operations globally, 14.7% of them were occupied by the USA.

Next is Brazil with 12.9%, Russia with 4.7%, Mexico 4.5%, Germany 4.2%, Turkey 3.6%, Argentina 2.8%, India 2.5%, Italy 2, 4% and the last in the ranking is Japan with 2.2%. In these states, for the year 2020, about 5 million plastic surgeries were performed from the 6.5 million that were performed in 2019.

In the US, the most requested intervention is breast augmentation, accounting for 25% of all plastic surgeries.

In Brazil, the most requested is fat removal, or as it is known in medical language, liposuction, accounting for 13.3% of operations, in Germany, liposuction remains the most requested with 18.2%, in Japan, eyelid surgery with 64.6%, in Turkey rhinoplasty with 18.6%, in Mexico, liposuction accounting for 16.2% of plastic surgeries, in Argentina about 20% of the request for intervention is dominated by breast surgery.

Even in Italy, the highest demand is for breast surgery with 16% of total interventions. In Spain, 26.8% of interventions are performed on the chest, in Greece 14.6% of interventions are performed on the eyelids.

The top five most requested non-surgical procedures are botulinum toxin (stomach botox, 43.2% of all non-surgical procedures), hyaluronic acid (28.1%), hair removal (12.8%), non-surgical fat reduction (3 .9%) and photographic renewal (3.6%). About 85% of non-surgical procedures are performed on women.
