The Belsh Municipal Council has voted against the merger of the Belsh Municipality with Elbasan.

In the vote, 7 Democratic Party councilors voted against, while 10 Socialist Party councilors abstained.

During the meeting, DP and SP advisors argued their position, presenting the reasons why, according to them, the Belsh Municipality, which has significant tourist potential, should continue to function and be self-administered.

According to the councilors, before undertaking such a reform, which directly affects citizens, an in-depth study should have been conducted on all the factors that would affect the lives of residents.

The meeting was also attended by representatives of civil society in Belsh, who presented their arguments regarding the population and criteria that, according to them, belong to the Belsh Municipality and its position as a separate unit of self-administration.

Despite opposition to the reform, there were debates among councilors during the meeting, especially regarding the abstention vote of SP councilors.

Public consultations have been held twice, but in both cases the turnout has been low. According to opposition councilors, one of the reasons is the fear of residents to raise their voices and express their opinions.

At the meeting held in the city, the Belsh Municipal Council received the opinion of a small number of citizens.
