The owner of Alta Bank in Serbia, Davor Macura, has been arrested on suspicion of illegally withdrawing around 45 billion dinars, approximately 380 million euros, from the bank's vault.
The Serbian Organized Crime Prosecutor's Office announced on November 2 that, in addition to Macura, two other senior bank employees were arrested: the director of the cash management department, GM, and another official from this department, IP.
According to the Prosecution, Macura is suspected of abusing his position to take money from the bank, with the help of two other officials.
They allegedly gave him their access cards to the safe or allowed him to enter by accompanying him, even though he did not have authorization to enter there.
The arrest comes just days after the Central Bank of Serbia revoked Alta Banka's operating license, following the deterioration of its financial situation.
Macura was in the spotlight in Serbia when Republican US Congressman Joe Wilson asked US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to impose sanctions on him and three other Serbian businessmen, whom he described as close to the government of Aleksandar Vučić.
Macura is a Serbian businessman who started his business with a currency exchange in Belgrade in 2008, and later expanded his business into banking, financial services, real estate, and trade.
