Polls and prediction markets, such as Polymarket and Kalshi, are playing an increasingly important role in the analysis of the US midterm elections. But how accurate will their predictions be? One of the main issues after the elections will be precisely the comparison between the actual results and what the polls and political betting markets predicted.
Polls have failed before, most notably in the 2016 election, when they failed to accurately predict the outcome in several key states. Another difficulty has been measuring the preferences of voters who support Donald Trump.
The novelty in these elections is the widespread use of prediction markets, which are being cited more and more frequently by American media.
Democrats aim to take control of the House of Representatives
According to forecasts, Democrats have a chance to gain control of the House of Representatives by overturning the result in three or four electoral districts.
Cook Political Report predicts that Democrats could gain between 9 and 19 more seats, bringing their number of representatives to around 224-234.
On October 16, the report shifted 11 more races in favor of the Democrats. Among them was Montana's 1st congressional district, which Trump had won by 12 points in 2024.
This does not mean that Democrats will definitely win these areas, but it shows that Republican weakness may extend beyond areas initially considered crucial.
Even the distribution of campaign funds shows that Republicans are facing a more difficult battle. In mid-October, the main Republican supercommittee canceled advertising investments in four competitive areas, focusing financial resources on 16 other races.
Meanwhile, Democrats were seeking additional funding to expand the number of districts where they could compete.
These movements are not direct predictions of the outcome, but show how parties are assessing risks and opportunities in the final weeks of the campaign.
The Senate, the most uncertain battle
Unlike the House of Representatives, the race for control of the Senate remains much more uncertain.
The Cook Political Report lists seven races as highly competitive: Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Ohio and Texas.
Six of these states are currently controlled by Republicans, while Michigan is in Democratic hands.
To take control of the Senate, Democrats must win at least four seats currently held by Republicans, while also retaining their seat in Michigan.
This is not necessarily a contradiction. Prediction markets also take into account other factors, such as the quality of candidates, the composition of the electorate, and the possibility that polls are wrong.
For this reason, the comparison between polls and prediction markets will be important not only to determine which of them more accurately predicted control of the Senate, but also to understand whether possible errors are related to the underestimation of the vote of one of the parties.
Ultimately, voter turnout and how dissatisfaction with the Trump administration translates into concrete votes could be decisive for the fate of the US Senate and Congress.
