London-Sofia flight lands in Budapest after bomb threat, NATO alerted

A Wizz Air passenger plane traveling from London to Sofia made an emergency landing in Budapest after a bomb threat on board.

The Airbus A321neo aircraft suddenly changed route while flying over Bosnia and Herzegovina, heading towards the Hungarian capital's Ferenc Liszt International Airport.

According to Hungarian Defense Minister Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi, the threat immediately activated NATO's air defense system, which declared the ALPHA alert.

A Hungarian Air Force Gripen fighter jet took off within minutes and escorted the passenger plane to a safe landing in Budapest, at 12:08.

Firefighters, police and counter-terrorism units were mobilized at the airport, while one of the runways was temporarily closed to ensure security.

After landing, Hungarian authorities initiated security checks to verify the threat, while the fighter jet returned to the Kecskemét military base.

Until the first reports, there was no confirmation of the presence of explosives on the plane.
