Killed Albanian and burned his body, sensational case reopened in Italy

The Court of Cassation in Italy has accepted the appeal of the Prosecutor's Office and ordered a new trial on appeal against a 56-year-old Italian man, accused of the murder of Nexhat Rama, a 40-year-old Albanian of Kosovo origin, in the province of Brescia.

The serious incident occurred on August 29, 2022 in Cologne, where Rama had gone to the Italian's service station to request the return of a debt of 30 thousand euros.

According to the reconstruction of the investigation, the Italian is suspected of shooting Rama in the head and then using the victim's car to transport the body. The vehicle was burned in an attempt to cover up the crime, while the 40-year-old's body was later found in the rural areas of Cologne.

In the first instance, the Italian citizen was sentenced to 27 years in prison for premeditated murder. However, on appeal, the court ruled out premeditation, recognized mitigating circumstances, and reduced the sentence to 14 years in prison.

The General Prosecutor's Office appealed the decision and the case reached the Court of Cassation, which has already decided that that part of the Appeals decision should be reconsidered.

The new trial will take place at the Court of Appeal in Venice, where it will be assessed once again whether the murder was premeditated. The prosecution had requested life imprisonment, while the defense had requested the Italian's innocence.
