Ilir Meta has remembered the one-year anniversary of the removal of News 24 television from its premises.
He says that event was a criminal act against free speech.
Meta's reaction
Today marks one year since the armed aggression and violent interruption of the "News 24" signal, a criminal act that not only hit a television station, but the very freedom of speech and independence of the media in Albania.
A year later, the situation is even more serious.
Albania has sunk even deeper into a media freedom crisis, according to reports from prestigious international organizations. Independent journalists are intimidated, threatened, and attacked, while any voice critical of the regime is lynched as an enemy.
A democracy is not measured by the number of television stations broadcasting, but by the freedom they have to tell the truth, especially the truth that the government does not want to hear.
Edi Rama has become the symbol of an autocrat who cannot tolerate criticism, does not accept accountability, and sees independent media as a threat to his regime.
But journalists are not servants of power, and freedom of speech does not require permission from the Prime Minister.
Neither propaganda nor lies produced by the Government's media mouthpieces can be called journalism.
Journalism is not propaganda. Journalism is truth, questioning, criticism, and accountability.
Therefore, we must all stand together in defense of professional journalists, independent media, and the right of every citizen to hear even the truths that the government would hide.
Under no circumstances can a journalist's life, career, dignity, and working conditions depend on the will of a politician, a government, or an oligarch.
Because free media cannot exist under fear and censorship, and democracy cannot survive without voices that dare to speak the blunt truth.
For this reason, the removal of "Rilindja" and this Prime Minister from power is not simply a political battle.
It is a necessity to save democracy, media freedom, and the right of every Albanian to hear the truth.
Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right and one of the vital pillars of a modern, democratic society. It is inseparable from the accountability of public institutions and the control that citizens must exercise over government.
Media freedom is one of the most important indicators of the state of democracy. Where journalists are intimidated, threatened, or silenced, where the media is controlled by the government and accountability is replaced by propaganda, there exists a dictatorship.
For Albania, a country that aspires to be part of the European Union, the regression in media freedom and independence is unacceptable.
