Leonardo Gesualdo

A notorious Italian mafia boss, who had been on the run for five years, was captured by the Carabinieri after a surprise and spectacular operation this morning.

The arrested person is 39-year-old Leonardo Gesualdo , from Foggia, a key figure in the " Società Foggian a" organization.

Since 2020, when he managed to escape during a major police operation that was underway at the time, Gesualdo, who had been sentenced to 12 years in prison, had been on the list of the most dangerous fugitives.

For this operation, temporary restraining orders, mainly for criminal offenses of extortion, were issued against 44 people.

In the early hours of Tuesday, carabinieri from the GIS (Italian Special Operations Unit) forced their way into a house on the outskirts of Foggia and literally caught him asleep, as he was sleeping at the time.

The 39-year-old mafioso offered no resistance, and during the search a pistol with six rounds in the magazine was found.

Who is Leonardo Gesualdo?

It was November 16, 2020, when Gesualdo disappeared. A judicial officer had described him directly: “ When there is a need to shoot, he is the person who will do it .”

Weapons, drugs, extortion and even the accusation that he had killed, on the evening of April 13, 2013, also convicted of crimes Claudio Socio in Via Lucera in Foggia, a crime for which he was acquitted, marked his criminal career. Gesualdo, born in 1986, was a member of the so-called “Foggia Society” (Società Foggiana).

He was included in the list of dangerous fugitives of the Italian Ministry of the Interior and had been wanted since November 16, 2020, when he had escaped the execution of a temporary detention order in connection with the "Decima Bis" operation of the Anti-Mafia prosecutor's office in Bari.

In the context of this case, he was sentenced in the first instance to 12 years in prison for participating in a mafia-type criminal organization.

The “Decima Bis” investigation, a natural continuation of the “Decima Azione” operation, had allowed the authorities to reconstruct the functional and organizational structure, as well as the criminal activities, of the three groups of the Società Foggiana, which periodically clashed with each other for the leadership and control of illegal activities in the city.

At the same time, the existence of a "common fund" was established, which, among other things, covered the salaries of members depending on their role, the "operating expenses" of the organization, as well as the legal expenses of prisoners belonging to this structure.
