The chairman of the Committee for Foreign Policy of the American Senate, Robert Mendez, has come out against the position of Derek Chollet, for the establishment of the Association of municipalities with a Serbian majority. According to him, Kosovo needs mutual recognition from Serbia and not division through the Association.
" I was worried when I heard Chollet. This is not what should be the US foreign policy in reference to Kosovo and the Western Balkans. We need long-term peace and it cannot be achieved with bad short-term decisions" "Long-term peace comes with mutual recognition". "Only with mutual recognition and the actions that take place as a result can there be a way forward for Kosovo and the Balkans ," said Collet. Menendez said that the Constitution of Kosovo guarantees all rights to minorities.
At the end of January, the adviser of the US Department of State, Derek Chollet, and the US special envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, underlined the necessity for the establishment of the Association of municipalities with a Serbian majority.
