In Tirana, the media face the same difficulties, political pressures and censorship even when reporting on the progress of European integration.
This is what independent observers and journalists in this field asserted today at a meeting on the challenges of the media during the reflection of the integration process in the EU.
At the civil society roundtable with European diplomats and journalists, it was emphasized that, just as in reporting on other fields, even with regard to news on the European integration process, Albania's media suffer from the same information blockages, lack of freedom of expression, of censorship, self-censorship, pressure from politics and owners.
Journalists and civil society assessed that this process is not given the necessary space in the public and media discussion, and this is even seen as an inhibition of the debate on issues of reality.
Journalism pedagogue and publicist Lutfi Dervishi says that currently in Albania, in the fight against corruption, there seem to be steps backwards, while with the freedom of the media, it can be seen that there are no steps forward.
"We see that there is more propaganda than information, more rumors than news, more denunciations than investigations. Much remains to be done because the media itself has its own problems of corruption and its inability to react", says Mr. Dervishi.
Observers claim that trust in the media and in state and judicial institutions directly depends on their reaction to problems and scandals, the punishment or not of crime.
They added that currently the role of the media has been taken by officials and institutions, businesses, but this situation highlights the need for professional journalists to separate the truth from half-truths and lies, and fabrications from reality.
The opening of the negotiations will bring a detailed scan on the country's progress according to EU standards and on the maturity of the Albanian media, the observers claimed.
Surveys of the Albanian public speak of a very high support for the process of integration into the European Union, which is a technical and complicated process, so media preparation needs to be always more professional, it was emphasized at the meeting.
The analysts underlined that the inclusion of Albania in a community with consolidated freedom and values such as the EU will make the Albanian society more democratic and its media more professional, so that the Albanian press can become like the European one./VOA
