The Constitutional Court dismissed the lawsuit of the opposition deputies for the Tourist Port of Durrës. With the decision taken this Friday, the Constitutional Court rejected the request of 37 opposition MPs, who sought the annulment of the agreement with the United Arab Emirates. Thus, there will no longer be any obstacle to the construction of the navy project.

The group of deputies requested in the lawsuit over 40 pages, that the implementation of that law be suspended, until the final decision of the Constitutional Court comes into force, because, according to them, it is incompatible with the provisions of the Stabilization and Association Agreement, as well as international agreements of mandatory for Albania.

The request was submitted to the Constitutional Court by Oerd Bylykbashi, representative of the Democratic Party, after suspicions of corruption with the plans for the construction of the Port of Durrës, which, according to him, are being approved without transparency and without open competitions.

The law ratifying the basic agreement with a 10-year validity provides for a series of facilities based on the agreement for the promotion and protection of investments between the two countries.

The agreement talks about a wide field of cooperation in economy, agriculture, tourism. It was approved by the government at the end of November 2020 and within a week it was approved in the Assembly with 91 votes in favor, 5 against and 4 abstentions, at the time when the Democratic Party abandoned the legislative institution and tried to burn the mandates of its deputies.

According to the Albanian government, the investment for the construction of the Port of Durrës is expected to reach 2 billion dollars, but the opposition suspects a large-scale corruption affair.

The agreement was signed on August 11 between the parties and the government brought it to the Parliament, where it was met with criticism and doubts from the opposition, as soon as it was learned that it was being entered into an accelerated procedure.

The agreement has a lifespan of 35 years, while the total completion of the project takes 20 years.
