Police, action against IPTV that harmed thousands of citizens: Controls,
Fraud with pirated decoders

It seems like the perfect solution: hundreds of TV channels, endless movies, live sports, and all at a ridiculous price. But behind this tempting offer lies a dangerous scam that is affecting thousands of Albanian consumers.

These are pirated IPTV decoders, sold illegally by individuals or phantom entities, and even by some internet service providers. Without a license, without control and without responsibility, these devices are spreading massively through social networks and the informal market.

Recently, a large-scale operation by the Cybercrime Directorate at the General Directorate of Police has uncovered a fraud scheme where several entities were illegally using the logo of the company “DigitAlb”, benefiting from sums of money from citizens. Investigations show that television programs were broadcast without a license from the Audiovisual Media Authority (AMA), causing the company considerable financial damage.

As part of the "Anti-Piracy" operation, controls were carried out on seven entities in Shkodër, Lezha, Tirana, Vlora and Saranda, where equipment for the illegal encoding and distribution of television channels, as well as decoders and other electronic devices were seized.

Investigations are ongoing for the criminal offenses of “Computer Fraud” and “Copyright Infringement.” The persons involved will face criminal liability under applicable legislation.

For consumers, the consequences are direct: at the most crucial moments the signal is interrupted, the screen goes black and the salesperson disappears. There is no contract, no invoice, no complaint and no refund.

Experts also warn of serious security risks, as some of these decoders may contain unsafe applications that endanger personal data and home networks. In addition to the financial risk, there is also a legal risk, as using pirated services makes the user part of an illegal activity.

Authorities describe this phenomenon as an organized scam that exploits the lack of information and low prices. The appeal to citizens is clear: to avoid dubious sources and choose only licensed platforms with secure and transparent service.

Because what starts as savings can end up as fraud and loss./ TCH
