The Tirana Court has remanded Darin Gezdari, 34, in prison and Arlinda Marku, 41, under house arrest, who are accused of laundering 11 million euros through fictitious companies.

None of them agreed to speak in court, but through their lawyers they requested a reduction in the sentence, but the court approved the request of prosecutor Ndini Tavani. The indictment states that the fraud scheme took place over two years.

The detainees are also said to have collaborated with each other by taking advantage of the opportunity from countries considered tax havens such as Cyprus, Gibraltar, Malta, etc. The money initially came to Albania, and was then transferred to Canada, making the movements further considered legal.

"This money was transferred to the Albanian state in fictitiously created companies, and then transferred to the Canadian state, all of this suspected criminal activity was carried out in order to launder the proceeds of the criminal offense," the statement says.

According to data from the Central Bureau of Investigation, there are at least 5 entities that they have in Albania. However, it is added that the "Coast to Coast" operation against tax evasion and money laundering is continuing to search for other names involved, whether Albanian or foreign citizens.

Suspicions about the scheme were initially raised by the Tax Investigation Directorate and later the Money Laundering Investigation Section in Tirana and the Financial Intelligence Agency were involved.
