The Democratic Party has requested two hours of permission for tomorrow's protest against the closure of TikTok.
It is learned that the opposition has requested permission from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM for the rally that DP leader Sali Berisha announced immediately after the government's decision to close this social network.
According to the letter submitted to the Tirana Local Police Directorate, the DP has announced that citizens will gather on the "Martyrs of the Nation" boulevard, in front of the prime minister's office.
Meanwhile, the police have also prepared a plan of measures for the smooth conduct of this protest, where all roads connecting to the "Martyrs of the Nation" boulevard will be blocked, and there will be diversions on some of them.
There will be around 1,200 personnel on the ground. RENEA forces will also be on standby, should their intervention be necessary. Meanwhile, employees of the Republic Guard will take charge of institutions of special importance.
Berisha calls for participation in protest
The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, today invited citizens to participate in tomorrow's protest against the closure of TikTok. Berisha says that the closure of the application is an act of censorship by the government.
"Tomorrow is a day where we all protest for free speech. To protest against censorship. To protest against a corrupt government that seeks to control the information that citizens receive. In my decades in dictatorship, the thing I hated most was censorship, the reserve funds of libraries, which could only be used with special authorizations, otherwise you couldn't touch them with your hands. But Edi Rama went beyond this and censors TikTok, currently the most modern means of communication. Based entirely on his intolerance towards criticism made of this tool ," Berisha said.
Berisha guaranteed students and young people that on May 12th they will have TikTok on their phones again.
"I guarantee all Albanian schoolchildren, 9-year school students, high school students, students and others, that on the 12th, TikTok will be on their phones, on their computers and Edi Rama will be severely punished for the anti-constitutional act, a megacrime of gigantic proportions, for this act of his. So let's leave everything out of respect for free speech and freedom, protest tomorrow at 7 o'clock in Skanderbeg Square in Tirana, gather from all over Albania. Especially the young. This is your protest. Tomorrow the word will be yours. Tomorrow free speech will have you as its protective knights. So let's all gather in support of them in their demand," said Berisha.
Minister of Education and Sports, Ogerta Manastirliu, announced that TikTok would be closed as a necessary measure for the safety of children. This decision was opposed by the opposition, which said that the closure comes just 2 months before the parliamentary elections.
