Petro Piti, only 25 years old, from Ura Vajgurore in Berat, tragically passed away yesterday evening while traveling on the Lushnjë-Berat axis.
Near Kashtbardhë village, Petro noticed a tractor without lights on the road and tried to brake.
The autobot with fuel that belonged to his family's business braked for several meters until the asphalt was cracked, but due to the load pushing it forward, the vehicle could not stop.
Xhezmi Metushi, the chief of the Lushnja fire department, told Euronews Albania that the operation to extract the 25-year-old from the overturned autobot was difficult and dangerous due to the oil leak.
"We quickly went to the scene, I directed the operation myself. Looking at the situation, after we secured the area and our employees that nothing worse could happen than there was a lot of fuel leakage, it was of increased risk, there was an oil leak where the boat was grounded. I immediately contacted the general director who alerted the neighboring firefighters and immediately a fire brigade with 7 members from Berat arrived.
I contacted the mayor who brought me heavy equipment and tools. The situation made our work difficult, the battered vehicle was on agricultural land, it was in the field, about 15 meters from the road. Then we also received heavy equipment that made it possible to lift the vehicle because it was impossible to operate in those conditions. When we went there were no signs of life, and it was impossible to raise the vehicle to the position it was. It was further intervened with a very heavy tonnage crane that raised the vehicle to a height. We tried to move him and it was impossible to get the accident victim out, it was impossible because the position was like that", said the firefighter.
