The General Directorate of Prisons has requested disciplinary action against Ilir Meta's lawyer, Kujtim Cakran, after allowing the former president, who has been in detention since October last year, to communicate with the media via his phone.

In the request to the National Chamber of Advocates, Prisons accuses the lawyer of violating the rules by allowing Ilir Meta to conduct an audio interview from the detention facilities.

"The action of the lawyer Mr. Kujtim Cakrani constitutes an excess of his role as a legal representative, enabling public communication through a procedure outside the formal framework of institutional approvals. He has bypassed the legal procedures for seeking approval from the relevant bodies, placing the detention institution before a fact committed in an arbitrary and unauthorized manner. This behavior seriously violates the order and security in the penitentiary system and the principle of equality before the law for all detainees.

For these reasons, the General Directorate of Prisons, in reference to Article 39 and Article 40 of Law No. 55/2018 "On the profession of lawyer in the Republic of Albania", requests the initiation of a disciplinary procedure against the lawyer Mr. Kujtim Cakrani. After the evaluation and treatment by you, we request that you inform us regarding the decision and the measure given to the lawyer Mr. Kujtim Cakrani.

"We are sending you, in Appendix 1, the transcript of the conversation held on the show," says the General Directorate of Prisons, which has sent the request for disciplinary measures to the National Chamber of Advocates.
