Italy - Tomorr Buzi, an Albanian living in Romano, has turned into a hero after rescuing a family of tourists who fell into the frozen waters of Lake Braies on Monday morning, while taking a walk on the ice.
According to what the Italian media write, Buzi threw himself into the cold waters on Monday to save the life of a 4-month-old baby. The baby's parents also fell into the water, but were not injured.
After being pulled out, the parents and the young child were taken to a clinic in Innsbruck, Austria, as the lake where the incident took place is very close to the border. They were all rescued by Buzi, who pulled them out of the cold water as it was learned that the toddler was going into hypothermia.
How the event happened
Tomorr Buzi was on a trip to Lake Braies in Trentino Alto Adige, with his wife and daughters. He heard the screams of a woman asking for help, accompanied by the screams of a baby, her four-month-old son.
Without hesitation, Tomorri ran to save the little one, risking his life as well. The 44-year-old Albanian, who lives in Romano di Lombardia, went to the layer of ice that had covered the lake. Walking on it would be impossible, given the small thickness of the ice, which caused 8 people to fall into the water last Monday. Buzi crawled and rolled carefully on the ice, to reach the child in danger, until he could catch him.
"No one could ever resist the cries of a woman asking for help, much less the cries of a baby. He was so small and helpless. When I saw him, touched by instinct, I immediately ran to save him. "It is a matter of seconds in which you do not think about anything other than your mission", said the Albanian for the Italian media
The woman and the girl shouted at him not to go, but he did not hear them.
"My wife and daughters were scared, I was not. At that moment I tried everything. But I was never afraid for my life. That child was in danger. "While my family was safe and that was enough for me to intervene."
After pulling him out of the icy water, Tomorr Buzi placed the baby on the frozen surface, waiting for help. He himself stood in the icy water and after help arrived the two were rescued.
"I walked almost 100 meters dragged on the ice in a desperate fight against time. When I got to where they were, the mother pulled the baby out of the water with all her might. It was clear that she was exhausted. I bent down and grabbed him. "
Happy, but also embarrassed, the 44-year-old, who later received a phone call from the child's parents: "They want to come and see me to thank me."
Praise
"I was told that when Tomorri saw the child and his parents in danger, he did not hesitate to help them. An officer, overwhelmed by emotions as he recalled the dramatic moments, told me how he took the child in his arms from Tomorri, a child who escaped death thanks to the timely and heroic intervention of our fellow citizen. I asked to meet Mr. Tomorr Buzi in person to have the opportunity to shake his hand, thank him and express on behalf of our entire community that we are proud of him ", said the mayor of Romano, Sebastian Nicoli.
