Protest organizers reveal list of demands for Rama, resignation, limitation of prime minister's mandate, and technical government
The protest against the government of Prime Minister Edi Rama has marked its 23rd consecutive day today.
During today's rally, on behalf of the protest coordination group, Dritan Goxhaj issued a statement, which revealed the official and non-negotiable demands compiled after proposals received from citizens during more than three weeks of resistance.
Goxhaj stated that this nationwide and peaceful protest aims for a radical change in the political and legal system in Albania, presenting the 5 main points of the platform:
1- The non-negotiable resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama and the entire government cabinet.
2- The creation of a transitional technical government, which will be non-partisan and will have a clear 12-month mandate.
3- Drafting a new Constitution that guarantees the full equality of citizens before the law, which will be approved by popular referendum. This constitutional reform provides for:
Amendment of the Electoral Code;
Amending the law on financing political parties and organizations;
Limiting the term of office of the Prime Minister to no more than two terms (full or partial) during an individual's entire political life.
4- Not giving up on the initial economic and environmental demands , which urgently require:
Cancellation of amendments to the law on “Protected Areas”;
Cancellation of amendments to the law on “Cultural Heritage”;
Repeal of the legal package known as the "Mountains Package";
Abolition of the status and legal framework for "Strategic Investments".
5- A new social contract between citizens and the state , which will be drafted through consultations with intellectuals, technical experts, and nonpartisan citizens proposed directly from the protest square.
