The GJKKO did not allow the live broadcast of the session, Veliaj's lawyer:
Erion Veliaj

Erion Veliaj's lawyer, Plarent Ndreca, has reiterated the 3 requests that were rejected the day before by the GJKKO, for the opening of 35 files with digital evidence, the live broadcast of the trial, and the removal of the mayor from the glass cage during court hearings.

Ndreca says they will use every legal means to get this process back on track with the Constitution and European standards.

Open the evidence. Open the cage. Open the cameras. Erion Veliaj's three demands
Honorable representatives of the media,

Yesterday's hearing against Erion Veliaj was not simply another procedural development, but a clear reflection of the dramatic situation in which the Albanian justice system is stuck.

On our part, basic requests for a due process of law were submitted. We requested that the court bring to the courtroom 35 files of digital evidence (CD/USB), which are unopened, and that this fact be established in the hearing: evidence that has not been opened, has not been seen and has not been evaluated even by the court of the previous hearing, although it has made a decision on them.

We also requested that this evidence be made available to the defense, as it has never been administered by it, while Mr. Veliaj not only did not receive it, but also has no technical possibility to familiarize himself with it. The court's reaction was shocking: it ignored this fact, considered the defense's time to familiarize itself with the documents to be exhausted, refused any verification, did not bring the files, did not ascertain their condition and, in the meantime, did not open them or familiarize itself with them.

The absurdity continued with the acceptance of the summary trial for some of the defendants, i.e. the trial on the current state of the acts, at a time when some of them are unopened and unexamined even by the court itself, which raises the essential question: on what basis was it assessed that the case could be resolved “in the state the acts are”, when the acts themselves have not been opened? A situation that created the clear conviction of a predetermined decision-making to divide the case and “take it out of hand” of the “hot” Veliaj case, a conviction reinforced by the positions of the prosecutors, who warned that our requests would be treated in another process, exactly as it happened.
Along the same lines, the request for the broadcast of the sessions was rejected without any argument and without legal basis, in open contradiction with the Constitution and the practice of the Constitutional Court. Likewise, the right of Mr. Veliaj to be in dignified and equal conditions with the other party, through the elimination of staying in the glass cage, a request that was treated cynically and arrogantly by the prosecution, comparing it to a stay in a "5-star hotel".

Yesterday's hearing was not simply a difference of procedural positions, but a stark contrast between a defense that demands standards, professionalism, and accountability and a process that evades standards, the Constitution, and the law. It exposed a real danger: a justice system that avoids confronting facts and truth, turning from a body of justice into a mechanism for "packaging" cases, deaf to argument and blind to the law.

This does not discourage us. On the contrary, it increases our responsibility from a professional duty to a civic duty, to use every legal means and to bring this process back on track with the Constitution and European standards. Without these conditions, any attempt to remove the “hot potato” or to wash our hands like “Ponce Pilate” will fail and responsibility, sometime, somewhere, towards someone, will seek its address.
Thank you!

Attorney Plarent Ndreca
