A luxury superyacht linked to Russian billionaire Alexei Mordashov has passed through the Strait of Hormuz, despite tensions and tight restrictions in this vital corridor for global energy trade.

The 142-meter yacht "Nord", linked to one of Vladimir Putin's key allies, sailed from Dubai to Muscat over the weekend, becoming one of the rare private vessels to have traversed the area in recent months.

According to maritime traffic records, the ship set sail on Friday and arrived at the Al Mouj marina on Sunday morning. Although Mordashov is not listed as the official owner, documents show that the yacht has been registered in the name of a company linked to his family since 2022. The Nord is estimated to be worth over $500 million.

His passage comes at a time when maritime traffic in the Persian Gulf has declined significantly due to the conflict and tensions between Iran and the United States.

About 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies typically pass through this strategic route, making any restrictions there directly impacting world markets.

Oil prices have risen sharply, with Brent reaching $109 per barrel, while Iran has restricted maritime movements following Donald Trump's announcement of a blockade of Iranian ports.

Meanwhile, diplomatic developments have intensified. Vladimir Putin hosted Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in St. Petersburg, who stressed the "depth and strength" of the strategic partnership between the two countries.

Putin, for his part, declared that the Iranian people are “fighting bravely” for their sovereignty. The superyacht “Nord” is equipped with extraordinary luxury, including a swimming pool, submarine and helicopter landing pad.

However, he remains in the spotlight due to his connection to Mordashov, who is under sanctions by the US, the European Union and the UK following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Despite calls to seize his assets, countries such as Hong Kong and the Maldives have not taken steps to seize the yacht. It is still not known whether Mordashov himself was on board during the controversial passage through one of the most sensitive points of the globe.
