The Head of Civil Emergencies, Haki Çako, stated that all forces and structures have been engaged to bring the fire in Fier under control.
He said that so far, two helicopters and an Air Tractor aircraft have been used not only in Levan, but also in other parts of Albania.
"For several hours now, Fier and the hills have been engulfed by a massive fire that came from the village of Drizë and the wind speed has burned down the forest and olive groves. It is being operated with all forces from the ground and from the air with two helicopters. There have been evacuations from businesses, not from homes. Only one abandoned home has been engulfed in flames. The fire was started by man. During the night, it will be operated with forces from the ground," said Çako.
He added that capacities to evacuate residents are on standby, as the fire was closer to several business units.
"All forces and structures, from the ground and from the air, all local units, supported and backed by air forces by helicopter, are engaged. We are working to finally bring the fire under control."
Of course, due to wind turbulence and high temperatures, the fire has reached extraordinary proportions. We are working to avoid any kind of problem that may arise in residential areas and with people. This is an undisputed priority. We continue the work.
Evacuation capacities are on standby, as the fire was closer to several business units, which, fortunately, were saved and were not burned or destroyed by the fire.
"But, anyway, it still remains a problem. There remains a potential risk and people need to understand us, beyond the fact that they need to be careful about lighting fires in these extraordinary temperatures, because, of course, fire has only a human factor ," he said.
