Details of how the brother of the Democratic MP was arrested in Rome

Markelian Hoti, brother of Democratic MP Elda Hoti, has been arrested on the outskirts of Rome, following a European arrest warrant for drug trafficking from South America to Europe.

The 27-year-old Albanian, wanted throughout Europe for cocaine trafficking, has been arrested in Rome.

He was caught in the Ponte di Nona area, on the eastern outskirts of the Italian capital, where he was hiding in a hotel with his girlfriend.

Hoti is suspected of having played a key role in an organization that trafficked cocaine from South America to Europe. The drugs arrived at the port of Antwerp in Belgium and were then transported in luxury cars from Northern Europe to Dubai.

After the seizure of 50 kilograms of cocaine hidden in containers at the port of Antwerp, the MP's brother had 'disappeared'.

In January, a European arrest warrant was issued against him for "criminal organization for drug trafficking", an offense that, according to Italian media , provides for up to 15 years in prison.

The arrest was made after an investigation coordinated by Interpol and the anti-drug squad in Rome.

According to Italian media, Hoti had remained "in the shadows" as the owner of the hotel where he was staying had not registered his data in the "Alloggiati Web" system, making him practically invisible to the authorities.

After his identity was verified, he was sent to prison, where he will remain awaiting extradition procedures to Belgium.
