The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has confirmed that paracetamol (also known as acetaminophen) remains a safe option for treating pain or fever in pregnant women when its use is clinically necessary. There is no evidence that would require a change to the current EU recommendations for its use.

"Paracetamol remains an important choice for treating pain or fever during pregnancy," said Steffen Thirstrup, EMA's Chief Medical Officer. "Our analysis of the scientific data has found no evidence that taking paracetamol during pregnancy causes autism in children."

According to the EMA, data show that paracetamol is not associated with a risk of malformations in the fetus or newborn.

In 2019, a review of studies on the neurological development of children exposed to paracetamol during pregnancy concluded that the evidence was unclear and no link to neurodevelopmental disorders was found.

The EMA stresses that paracetamol should be used only when necessary, at the lowest effective dose, for the shortest possible time and as infrequently as possible. Pregnant women are advised to always consult their doctor about any medication during pregnancy.

Regulatory authorities in the EU will continue to monitor the safety of medicines containing paracetamol and will take immediate action if new data emerge.
