Erion Veliaj will not be present at the Tirana Municipal Council meeting, where it will be decided whether or not he will be dismissed from office. This was the decision taken today by the Legal Affairs and Social Justice Committee.
Although this commission would discuss and vote on the consideration of the request of Veliaj, who has been behind bars since February 10, the 'final stamp' was with the Prosecutor's Office. We recall that the decisive meeting of the Municipal Council is scheduled for 16:00. The request, supported by the socialist members of the council, is based on Article 62 of the Law "On Local Self-Government", which provides for the dismissal of a mayor if he is absent from duty for more than three months without interruption.
According to the advisors, since Veliaj's arrest on February 10, Tirana has been without an elected leader and the situation requires an immediate solution.
