Pope Francis is in critical condition after suffering a prolonged asthmatic respiratory attack on Saturday that required high oxygen flows, the Vatican said.

The 88-year-old, who has been hospitalized at the Gemelli hospital since February 14 with a complex lung infection, also received a blood transfusion after tests showed a condition related to anemia, the Vatican said in an update on the Pope's health.

"The Holy Father continues to be alert and spent the day in a chair, although in more pain than yesterday. At the moment the prognosis is reserved," the statement said.

Doctors at the Gemelli hospital explained that Pope Francis "has asked for the truth to be told" and the bulletin distributed at the dinner is worrying: "The condition of the Holy Father continues to be critical", so as we explained yesterday, the Pope is not out of danger."

Earlier, doctors said Francis was battling pneumonia and a complex respiratory infection that doctors say remains vulnerable and will keep him hospitalized for at least another week.
