This Saturday, six live hostages are expected to be released by Hamas, as the first phase of the ceasefire agreement between the Palestinian armed group continues.

Avera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed have been named by Hamas as among those who will return today.

They were captured in 2014 and 2015 respectively after crossing into Gaza on their own. Four others have been named by family members.

They are Omer Shem Tov, 22, Eliya Cohen, 27, and Omer Wenkert, 23, who were each taken from the Nova Festival on October 7, 2023, as well as 40-year-old Tal Shoam, who was kidnapped from Kibbutz Be'eri.

Israel has said it will release all women and those under the age of 19 detained since last October.

People are gathering to watch the surrender, with armed and masked Hamas members standing alongside civilians and children.

The hostage release is also expected to take place in Nuseirat in central Gaza.

The handover of Israeli hostages in Hamas-run Gaza, both dead and alive, has drawn widespread criticism, with Israel calling it cruel propaganda.

Every week, Hamas fighters and members of other armed groups in Gaza line up in front of a platform with posters praising Hamas leaders and denouncing Israel.

Red Cross representatives sign the papers on stage with a masked Hamas fighter, who seals them before the hostages emerge from a car amid armed fighters and mount the stage. There, they are forced to speak before being transferred to Red Cross care.

Despite criticism, Hamas has continued this practice. This seems to be intended to demonstrate its survival and ability to control events in Gaza.

Hamas's practice may create the impression of acting as a governing authority rather than a terrorist group.

This has been contradicted by the plight of some hostages and the stories that have emerged about their suffering. However, Hamas has continued this formula, including the handover of coffins.

This development has led the UN human rights chief, Volker Turk, to denounce the 'parade of troops' as abhorrent and cruel.
