The return semi-final of the Champions League between Inter and Barcelona is getting closer, which will take place on Tuesday evening at the “San Siro”, starting at 21:00. After the spectacular 3-3 draw in the first leg, the black and whites still have a sensational qualification against one of the strongest teams in Europe at the moment, which, however, did not hesitate to stir up controversy before the match after the appointment of the referee, which saw the selection fall on the Polish Szymon Marciniak: “He is a Real Madrid fan”, is the unanimous chorus that has come from Catalonia, bringing back an old controversial video. However, on the pitch, when Inter plays, the reality is different: and it does not smile on the black and whites.
The Inter-Barcelona vigil in the Azulgrana camp is full of tension: the spectacular movements of Lamine Yamal are not enough to calm the Catalan hearts that are very afraid of the surprise at the “San Siro”, where Barça will have to win the return leg in a semi-final – something that statistically has not happened since the distant year 2011. Against superstitions and common customs, everything is thrown into the field, including the predictable controversy about Szymon Marciniak, the referee assigned to direct this delicate confrontation. Thus, most of the Spanish press has opened the sports pages criticizing the Polish referee.
"Officially, it will be the Madrid player Marciniak who will referee Inter-Barcelona". The daily Sport, very close to the azulgrana colors, does not use any twists of words to present the appointment of the match on Tuesday evening, highlighting a "deliberate" choice by UEFA against Barcelona. An accusation that is also highlighted by Mundo Deportivo, which further aggravates the tone by listing the sensational precedents of the "incompetence" of the Polish referee and his VAR team, including the controversy that has never been fully explained about the "double touch" of Álvarez in a penalty that punished Atletico against Real. But the greatest instrumentalization comes by republishing an old video in which Marciniak is seen in the referees' locker room with a small bag on a table bearing the "Casa Blanca" emblem.
The "scandal" video: Marciniak with the small bag with the Real Madrid logo

In the "accused" sequence, the Polish referee is seen smiling and answering with amusement to an interlocutor in a very relaxed atmosphere inside the dressing room. But when the cameras follow Marciniak, a small bag bearing the Blancos logo appears in the picture, on a table where other personal belongings of the referee are placed. A footage that belongs to more than two years ago, but that comes to light whenever there is a need to revive doubts about the referee's "Madridism", for someone's benefit. Not to mention that such "gifts" are made by the host clubs to the refereeing staff as a form of courtesy, but in any case the appointment for Inter-Barcelona has once again opened up the field for predictive speculations from the azulgran camp.
Despite the doubts and accusations, the field – which is ultimately what matters – tells a different story, which certainly does not favor Inter when Marciniak referees. With the Pole with the whistle in hand, the black and white precedents are extremely negative and painful. He was in the final in Istanbul in 2023, when Inter was defeated by Manchester City. He also refereed the last transfer of the last edition of the Champions League for the black and white, when Simone Inzaghi's team lost on penalties to Atletico Madrid. With Marciniak, Inter has won only twice in nine matches, the last of which in the Europa League, in 2020, when the team led by Conte defeated Shakhtar Donetsk. In total, with Marciniak, Inter has won only 2 times, drawn three matches and suffered a total of four defeats.
