Uefa explains the reasons for the red card against Lloyd Kelly. After a head-on collision with Yilmaz, the black and white defender fell with his heels on the opponent's leg, completely involuntarily. Referee Joao Pinheiro immediately issues a yellow card, but is then called by VAR and decides to issue a red card. A decision that also changes the length of Kelly's suspension, which will be two matches and not just one.
Through its official website, Uefa has explained the motives that led to the decision to issue a direct red card: "The Juventus player, number 6, using his heels had a strong, irregular contact with the opponent's left ankle, clearly putting his physical integrity at risk ," the announcement reads.
But Uefa's explanation has not convinced. Former Italian referee Graziano Cesari comments on Lloyd Kelly's dismissal in Juventus-Galatasaray: " The straight red is pure madness. The VAR's Kwiatkowski's to referee Pinheiro is an interference against football regulations and common sense. The black and white defender jumps and plays the ball with his head, then has to return to the ground. Where would the intention be to endanger the integrity of the opponent?".
