It will be France that will challenge the surprise Morocco in the semifinals, after beating England with a score of 2 to 1.
France were the first to take the lead with a Tchouameni goal in the first half. The second half brought the match equal, thanks to a penalty in favor of England. The goal was scored by captain Harry Kane. However, France took the lead again through Giroud.
A chance to equalize failed when Kane missed England's second penalty.
This was the first meeting between two teams with a century-old rivalry, in a world quarter-final.
The two teams had previously met on 5 occasions from 1966 to 2012, but always in the group stage. France had won only in one challenge, England 2 times, while 3 meetings had ended in a draw.
The French team will now face Morocco in the semi-finals, which eliminated Portugal earlier this Saturday.
The first semi-final of the World Cup will be played on December 13, between Argentina and Croatia. While Morocco-France is played on December 14.
