Football has begun testing a technological innovation in refereeing matches, as digital yellow and red cards have been used in Uruguay, instead of traditional ones.

The test took place on October 15, in the match between Nacional and Rentistas, within the framework of the Uruguayan Cup, where referee Eduardo Varela used an electronic device to signal disciplinary penalties.

The device, which resembles a small phone or tablet, is designed to make referees' work easier and improve the recording of events during matches.

Through this system, it is intended that cards, expulsions and other disciplinary events will be automatically recorded in the Uruguayan Football Federation's COMET system.

According to media reports, the device can even function without a Wi-Fi connection, enabling its use during matches without the need for a constant internet connection.
