The chairman of the new Municipal Council of Himara is resolved amid tensions:
Himara, Municipal Council

The new council of the Municipality of Himara held its first meeting this Tuesday amid tensions and debates between the supporters of the elected mayor of the Municipality, Fredi Beleri, and the socialist members.

The members elected a representative of the Socialist Party, which also has the largest number of mandates, as chairman of the Municipal Council.

The elected Mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri, addressed the councilors from prison through a letter, after the day before the Special Court in Tirana rejected his request to be present and take the oath.

The first meeting of the Municipal Council of Himara was held today amid tensions and debates between and employees of the municipality of Himara.

The members of the Council elected with a majority of votes the Chairman of the Municipal Council, Dhimitër Kapaj, a socialist representative who received 13 votes, while his rival Afrovita Dhimojani received 8 votes.

The elected Mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri, addressed the councilors from prison through a letter, after the day before the Special Court in Tirana rejected his request to be present and take the oath.

Mr. Beleri, who is in custody on the charge of vote buying, said in the letter sent to the councilors that he was prevented from taking office and asked for the support of international organizations.

The councilors of the "Together We Win" coalition requested that Beleri take the oath through the connection with "Skype", while until the resolution of the legal impasse, the Municipality of Himara is expected to continue to be led by the current pride in office, Jorgo Goro.

Mr. Beleri was the winner in the elections of May 14, with a narrow margin of votes over the socialist candidate, former mayor Jorgo Goro, while later the Central Election Commission gave him the mandate of the future leader of Himara Municipality.

Fredi Beleri's arrest two days before the May 14 local elections in Albania provoked the irritation of relations with Greece, given that Beleri is a representative of the Union Party for Human Rights, which protects the rights of Greek minorities.

Mr. Beleri's candidacy was also supported by the Freedom Party of former president Ilir Meta and the group of democrats led by former prime minister Sali Berisha.

The Greek Foreign Ministry, through a statement, said yesterday that the Court's refusal "to allow him to participate in the first meeting of the new Municipal Council, as well as to take the oath and officially take office", shows, according to it, that "the purpose of to the Albanian authorities is to deprive him of the office of mayor".

Even the Ambassador of Greece in Albania, Kostandina Kamitci, told reporters immediately after the closing of the meeting of the City Council in Himara, where she was present, that "this case is a big blow to the rule of law"./ VOA
