The President of the Republic of Albania, Bajram Begaj, is on a visit to the Vatican where he was received by Pope Francis.
In an interview given to the Italian media "Il Tempo", Begaj states that he has asked Pope Francis for the Vatican to recognize Kosovo as an independent state.
The head of the Albanian state says that the Pope's role is important for the Western Balkans, and according to him, the Pope's attention to Kosovo would greatly help the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue.
As for the European future of the region, Begaj said that the expansion of the EU in the Balkans does not have to face Euroscepticism.
Question: President, you come from the Balkan region, which, apart from being located across the Adriatic, has been the source of several bloody wars in the past. Even today, tensions in Kosovo, Bosnia and Montenegro are high. How do you think the future of your region?
Begaj : It is precisely our experience in the Balkans that teaches us that war games cannot be played in regions with a problematic past and present. For this reason, we need continuous dialogue, economic prosperity, positive energy for our citizens, but above all, a genuine European projection for our future. The enlargement of the EU in the Balkans does not have to face the internal Europopticism of some political forces of the EU, but it should be the only way to make the entire Balkans part of the EU away from the influence of third powers in growth.
Question : President, you invited Pope Francis on another visit to Albania. Is this invitation related to your wish for more European attention towards your country and your region?
Begaj : First of all, my invitation concerns the inauguration of the beginning of the works at the Sanctuary of Mother Teresa (Saint Teresa) in Tirana, a very important work for Albania, Albanians and the Christian world. Let's not forget that Mother Teresa was canonized by Pope Francis in 2016, two years after her visit to Tirana. I am convinced that Albanians would like to express their deep gratitude to the Pope for his role in the sanctification of the great Albanian nation, which undoubtedly belongs to the whole world.
Also, the role of the Pope and the Holy See is very important to increase the attention of the EU and the West, not only to maintain peace in the Balkan Region, but also to ensure the European future of the Balkans. From this point of view, I certainly asked Pope Francis for the Vatican to recognize Kosovo as a state, since this recognition would help even more the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue efforts that are being led today by the European Union and the United States of America.
