In a speech in the German parliament, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said today that it is in the interest of Germany and Europe that the countries of the Western Balkans join the European Union. He welcomed the increase of the EU's engagement with the six countries of the region, while he praised the decisions to give Bosnia and Herzegovina candidate status and Croatia's entry into the Schengen area.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz welcomed the revival of European Union enlargement talks with the six Western Balkan countries in recent months and this week's decision to grant Bosnia-Herzegovina candidate status.
Scholz made the comments in his speech to parliament ahead of a high-level meeting of the 27-member bloc in Brussels.
"It is in the German and European interest that the rest of the Balkans become part of the European Union," Mr. Scholz told lawmakers in Berlin.
At the moment, the six countries of the Western Balkans are at different stages in their aspiration for membership in the big European family.
The German chancellor also praised the decision to introduce Croatia into the European travel zone without controls, known as the Schengen area.
"It is also in our interest that from 2023 Croatia is part of the Schengen zone", said Mr. Scholz.
Scholz said that the same should be done with Bulgaria and Romania, whose inclusion in the Schengen zone was blocked last week by Austria.
During the last years, the process of enlargement of the European Union has not marked any progress.
But after the Russian attack on Ukraine at the end of February, EU officials have emphasized that increasing the bloc's engagement with the Balkan countries is vital for security in Europe.
The chancellor said support for Kiev and sanctions against Moscow will continue to intensify as long as President Vladimir Putin continues his war against Ukraine.
"We will make sure that Ukraine continues to have the financial resources it needs in 2023," he said as he announced plans to provide Kiev with an additional 18 billion euros.
Speaking about the importance of unity, Scholz said that strengthening the partnership with the United States through "common and fair trade" is essential.
