Edi Rama

Edi Rama often likes to play the "joker" at international summits. This is a way to attract attention. But sometimes, the "joke" also has consequences.

This "lesson" seems to have been learned this Thursday by the head of the Albanian government after what happened at the European Political Committee summit held in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Before sitting down at the table, Rama was filmed mocking US President Donald Trump after his constant "blunders" that he had achieved peace between Albania and Azerbaijan by confusing our country with Armenia.

“You should apologize to us… because you didn’t congratulate us on the peace agreement that President Trump made between Albania and Azerbaijan,” Rama told French President Emmanuel Macron, making Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev burst out laughing.

"I'm sorry about that," Macron said jokingly, slapping Rama on the cheek, as if to tell him that the joke was too much.

That's how long it took for the video to make the rounds of all the international media. "Politico" writes that Trump was mocked by European leaders for the Armenia-Albania confusion .

The article states that “ US President Donald Trump’s geographical confusion was the subject of jokes among world leaders at a summit on Thursday. Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama was filmed mocking French President Emmanuel Macron and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev at the European Political Community meeting in Copenhagen on Thursday .”

The images have also been echoed in the Italian media.

Euronews has also shared the video of this moment online. In the Euronews video, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama mocks Trump for confusing Albania with Armenia.

Even the British newspaper "The Telegraph" wrote that " French President Emmanuel Macron, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev have been filmed joking with US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly confused Albania with Armenia ."

Even Russian media echoed Rama's joke. "RT" shared the video, where Rama jokes with Macron and mocks one of President Donald Trump's statements.

Rama's withdrawal

Seeing that this unkind joke had backfired, Rama tried in the evening to minimize the gesture by calling it "a friendly joke."

" It is truly extraordinary how the media works today and how so-called "virality" can so easily distort reality. A sentence said humorously, in a spirit of friendship, suddenly turns into the international title of a summit with dozens of countries, while everything else, the real essence, becomes irrelevant.

But yes, it was a pleasure today to be with my old friend Ilham Aliyev and, in the presence of our dear mutual friend Emmanuel Macron, to recall a slip of the tongue by President Trump, who once said that Albania had also managed to make peace with Azerbaijan, while Emmanuel himself had worked tirelessly, for a long time, to bring peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

"A joke, a friendly moment. Of course, there is no problem if it spreads, but distorting it and turning it into political poison is simply unfair ," Rama wrote on X.

He has even praised the head of the White House.

" So let's be blunt: The truth is that President Trump has shown himself to be a leader who brought the word 'peace' back to the vocabulary of the West after many years. And yes, in an incredibly short time, he achieved peace where others had tried but failed, and he continues to pursue it with determination. That exchange was nothing more than a moment of humor between people who are actually among President Trump's biggest admirers ," Rama writes in X./ Lapsi
