Rama in Davos: Brussels must understand that the EU is declining in the region

Prime Minister Edi Rama held a discussion today in Davos, in a panel where the President of Serbia, Aleksandër Vucic, was also a part.

Prime Minister Rama said that in the region of the Western Balkans, the EU is declining and this should be understood as soon as possible by the leaders in Brussels. According to the head of the government, this is not happening in Albania, where he said that the popularity of Russia and Putin is only 0.07%.

Rama said that the region is on a front when it comes to condemning Russia.

"However, we are there, in the heart of Europe. We're not going anywhere. And the point is, I would like the Serbs to go somewhere else, but they can't go anywhere else. This is where my argument for the region begins, for peace and for what we must protect. People in Brussels must understand that we are in a region where the EU is declining and Putin is increasingly being seen as a hero in some countries. Not in Albania. In Albania it is different, the popularity is 0.07. Again it's a lot for us because as I said we are absolutely quite involved and we love the EU 99%. We love the USA, 100%. We should actually preserve this. In a way, the Serbian president and I have a very big disagreement regarding what he calls the region of Serbia and what I call the free state of Kosovo. I have my arguments for this. This does not make me blind to the need to keep everyone together. To conclude, I want to say one last thing. There is a lot of criticism of Angela Merkel and the blind politicians who took the Russian gas and are now replacing it. The way I understand the world is that they are not replacing the dirty Russian source with some clean source from vibrating democracy. It is also part market. There are many things, so I would not rush to make judgments. I mean we need to understand each other much better. Something very fundamental is happening that all of us in the Western Balkans are on one front, including Serbia, when it comes to condemning Russia, to condemning the invasion. So on a front in the United Nations. When it comes to sanctions, yes. It can be done by anyone", said Rama. To conclude, I want to say one last thing. Rama said that financial support from the EU is also needed towards the Western Balkans, as he sees that North Macedonia is in danger of going towards a deep nationalism that could create problems.

"We need to understand something, yes, sanctions are good, but in the meantime EU countries have recovery funds, they have funds for miracles from the EU in addition to their income. None of us in the region have. If the EU will make us a little bit more part of that I don't pretend to get as much funding as our neighbors who are not in the Balkans because they are, you know, that's something we need, something we have to get. It's something that all these countries get. Must get RMV. We talk about Serbia because it is more trendy, but RMV is much more at risk of going towards a deep nationalism that can cause problems", said Rama.
