Rama: We will decriminalize defamation of journalists
Edi Rama

Speaking at the 7th National Conference on the Right to Information, Prime Minister Edi Rama announced that the government will exempt journalists from the defamation law.

According to him, this is a step towards freedom of speech, while emphasizing that this initiative constitutes a concrete commitment and not just a political statement, adding that the goal is to create a more favorable climate for practicing the profession of journalist.

"I want to say that, in the meantime, we have made another commitment that shows the opposite of what is said by the 'glass half empty', which is the decriminalization of defamation for journalists. It is not that there has been any journalist who has been criminally hit by government lawsuits in these years, nor have there been any lawsuits for journalists, whom we have banned for years. This is not listed among the reasons to feel free and empowered at work, according to the 'glass half empty'.

"We will take this next step towards freedom of speech and relaxation of the situation of journalists in general. I hope I have addressed some issues, but there are others to discuss. We are not simply in a situation where we express our will, but we are systematically trying to materialize our will with progress," Rama said.
