The President of the European Commission, Ursula Von Der Leyen, during the joint conference with Prime Minister Edi Rama in Tirana, announced a direct budget aid for the Western Balkans from the EU for the energy crisis.
Ursula Von der Leyen declared that the EU will donate 80 million euros to Albania as support for the energy crisis and 500 million euros to the Balkans for the modernization of the energy system.
"These are achievements in a time of challenges, here I mean the war in Ukraine. Russia is violating the international order and every UN Charter. Fortunately, Albania does not depend on Russian gas at all, but of course the electricity that comes to Albania is affected by the stratospheric prices in Albania. We have decided to be unitary and solidary. So we are part of an energy union and we are proposing an energy support package for the Western Balkans to influence prices. There will be 80 million euros in grants. Then there will be support for the power system. Here we are talking about 500 million euros in grants for the entire region to invest in the energy infrastructure", declared Von Der Leyen.
She further emphasized that the aid will be channeled through economic and investment plans. "Renewable energy is also important for us. The investment will be in the floating solar plant in Vaun e Deja", said the EC President.
She further spoke about the work done by Albania in the process of European integration and the attitude towards the war in Ukraine.
"It is really a pleasure to return to Tirana. This is your success, the result of many years of effort, great work that Albania and Albanians have done. You have maintained a very strong focus on the integration process and of course this has led to negotiations. It is exemplary to see that Albania has defended the international order based on the rules of the UNSC. This honors you, shows that we are a community with the same values that we shared.
Albania is showing that it is moving determinedly in the EU process. The enlargement report has shown the progress that Albania is making. You are strengthening the justice system.
You have also adopted new measures to guarantee equality and inclusiveness. Your economy has become strong after COVID. these are achievements in a time full of challenges. I mean the Russian aggression and the war in Ukraine. Russia is violating international order and international law and every EU charter. Russia is using energy as a weapon," Von Der Leyen said.
The President of the EC stated that the December 6 summit is of great importance,
"Prime Minister, dear Edi, I think that Albania can be proud of its achievements. By words and deeds, the citizens of Albania have shown not only foresight, but also resistance. On December 6, we will meet again at the summit and it will be a very important meeting", she said.
