Omonia issues message in extremist tones: Deliberate fires burned the lands of

The Organization of the Greek Minority in Albania, Omonia, has issued a public statement after the serious situation of fires in the south of the country.

The organization Omonia announces through a statement sent by email, that it has gathered the presidency for the situation of the fires and accuses the government of deliberately leaving the minority under the power of the fires.

What stands out is the conspiratorial tone of the statement that charges that the fires were set on purpose on the lands of the Greek minority, to scare and drive them away, an unprecedented language for an organization in the country.

OMONIA statement:

Extraordinary meeting of the General Presidency of the Organization. Indignation and sadness over the consequences of prolonged and general fires in the basic territories of the Greek Ethnic Minority. Assessment of damages and consequences on the local society and economy.

Under the chairmanship of the Chairman of the Organization and a deep sense of responsibility towards the situation created by the prolonged continuation of mass fires in the areas of Saranda – Delvina, the General Presidency of the Organization met with an emergency.

In a first assessment of the tragic consequences caused by fires in almost all communities with a historical dimension, especially the psychological impact created by situations being a period where a large number of residents return to their paternal homes, sharing the general perception in the community that fires are not random at all and were mostly deliberately provoked, The General Presidency expresses its protest for the negligence and indifference of the state authorities and the inefficiency in preventing and continuing to cope with them.

Any justifications and comparisons with other situations in time or other countries cannot cover the real facts about which there was a wide and detailed discussion.

The consequences of this season's fires are perhaps the most tragic since they involve the residential areas themselves, causing damage to family homes but also to Orthodox churches such as in Lefterohor, Lekël, Senica, etc. In addition, old and new olive groves, vineyards, livestock farms, etc., were destroyed, the financial and economic damage of which is particularly high. In particular, we focus on the consequences and impact that this causes on the removal of additional new families from the territories, since the undertaking of the effort again requires funds on the one hand and will on the other.

We congratulate all the residents as much as they could – especially the young people who happened to be in our hearths – in the effort to cope with the fires and save their possessions but also places of worship: monasteries, churches and paracles.

Expressing indignation and anger for the abandonment at the mercy of the fate of residents and communities by the state authorities, avoiding the fatalistic treatment of the situation, the General Presidency of BDMEG OMONOIA requests and will try so that the services of the local municipalities make an immediate registration and economic assessment of the damages left behind by the fire flames. There should be an immediate reflection on their compensation since it is mostly dedicated to state negligence. As far as the agriculture sector is concerned, we insist on the priority and unjustified support of farmers and livestock farmers whose economies were destroyed. We also require attention and funding in terms of reforestation procedures but also preventive measures to avoid equally aggravating phenomena that will follow from seasonal atmospheric rainfall in damaged mountainous areas.

In order not to repeat the same situation every year, a substantial revision of the mentality, structuring and strengthening of the technical infrastructure as well as a significant increase in personnel in the fire services and dealing with emergency situations is required.

Not as words of consolation and blessings, but in awareness of our historical course and the outstanding love for the homeland that distinguishes us, in response to the intended objective under the consideration that the fires were provoked intentionally and with cause, we call for the conscientious and persistent participation of each of us in order to transform the situation into a chance for responsible political activism in the effort for the uninterrupted continuation of the presence of the indigenous Greek communities in our paternal historical territories.
