During the video broadcast live on social media, Prime Minister Edi Rama also responded to criticisms about the management of the fires in the country. He emphasized that everyone has been on their feet, committed to managing the situation.
For the prime minister, fires cannot be extinguished with magical force, so for those who have been critical of the government after the critical situation with the flames that surrounded Delvina or Poliçan, the head of government brought similar cases from Turkey and Spain.
"Now I'm not going to discuss the issue of face, but what measures are we talking about? Everyone has been on their feet, 10 thousand or so forces have been trying day and night at all levels with the flames, and if it weren't in a broader context and if we didn't have these countries in the same situation, maybe there would be a greater responsibility somewhere, but in fact, when someone comes out and tells me why these more powerful countries can't prevent fires and have fires, then we can go in and discuss it differently.
"It's not about removing responsibilities. We know the progress, the limitations, we know what we have done and what we need to do, we know everything, but to talk about the fact that there were fires from a cafe or a beach umbrella and to raise accusations, ridicule, etc. about why the fires were not prevented is beyond words," said Rama.
Regarding comments about why there were not enough planes, Rama brought several examples from Europe that, according to him, are also in situations similar to fires, despite having greater capacities.
"In August, 440 thousand hectares were burned in the territory of Europe, and the vast majority of them in the territory of southern Europe. This is double the calculated average of the last 20 years. We can talk a lot, we can give a lot of opinions, some may say we need more planes, but we are talking about great powers.
Spain is one of the largest NATO powers and is facing a very difficult situation. Turkey has 55,500 people evacuated at this moment. And it is known what planes, drones and soldiers Turkey has. A little reflection is needed to avoid immediately drawing conclusions and to understand that there are definitely things that need to be done more and better, that need to be improved, but there is no magic force that can stop the fires. This is a phenomenon that is becoming more and more present and I am telling you that in mid-July, the data of the European Forest Fire System show that 230 thousand hectares were burned within the borders of the EU, which means about 117% above the average of the last 20 years, more than double. And you cannot say that there are no planes in those countries,” Rama added, listing all the figures of all the forces and planes that have been available.
