President Ilir Meta says that the issue of the maritime border agreement with Greece has always been closely followed by the Presidency Institution. He says he has been open and cooperative for a solution in accordance with the Constitution and the decision of the Constitutional Court.
In an interview with Fax News, Meta stated that he told Prime Minister Edi Rama when he was also Foreign Minister to request an authorization in case he decides to accept the request of the Greek side for a political approach.
"It is an issue that is very clearly exhausted by the Institution of the Presidency. The President has been very open and cooperative for a solution in respect of our Constitution and the decision of the Constitutional Court, for this purpose we have given the authorization for negotiations.
Several rounds of negotiations followed and the Greek side was asked to have a political approach, which could not be done by the negotiators, because they are mandated precisely to implement domestic and international law, as well as to negotiate in relationship with the law.
In this situation, I told Mr. Rama, who was also the Minister of Foreign Affairs, that if you want to solve it in this way, come and ask for the authorization and take it over, because the negotiators can not do illegal actions.
Second, they have no political will other than the duty to enforce the law and to refer to International Law and our law. Because in the end, you are the leader of the majority, what will be negotiated will go to Parliament to be voted. "But tomorrow I can go to the Constitutional Court again, if anyone complains", said Meta.
Immediately, Meta stated that Rama never asked for authorization, although he stressed that he has carried out actions that stand out from the interviews that raise serious doubts about the integrity and goals in relation to the interests of Albania.
"And obviously I have to take on the Government to protect this. He never asked for an authorization, when it is clear that he has done actions, the ones we find out most from the Greek side from the interviews given, unauthorized, which raise serious doubts about the integrity and intentions of this behavior in relation to the interests of Albania.
I have been and am for an honest solution, for a fair solution, away from double play. "But this can never happen outside of transparency and in violation of the Constitution of Albania" , said Meta.
