"To urgently give up this hopeless attempt, and to implement without delay the recommendations of the IMF and the EU, apologizing to all honest Albanians for this undeserved provocation."
This was today's ultimatum of President Ilir Meta to the Government regarding the draft law on fiscal amnesty, where he listed the arguments brought by the EC, where, among other things, it was said that Albania's controls against money laundering would be weakened, the world of crime and honest business will be hit.
But will Meta really protect the interests of the Albanians and the Constitution of the Republic of Albania or is this just pressure for his own benefit?
It is enough to remember the changes and additions in 2018 in the law "On Income Tax" where part of it also provided for the distribution of dividends. In every public appearance, Meta listed the arguments that this law was in violation of the Constitution and promised that he would take it to the Constitutional Court and SPAK.
However, we did not see any of these actions being done by the head of state. What prevented Meta from taking these actions that the law allows is not known, but strong suspicions are that it may have happened for kleintelist reasons since the President's family is famous for such connections.
This is just one example in the many cases that Ilir Meta has lowered his tone and has become a collaborator in open violation of laws.
Is it perhaps the turn for the fiscal amnesty, where the president, after receiving the next "installment", lowers his tone with the Government and forgets the ultimatums given and the arguments against it? Time will tell this.
