The Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has reacted after the arrest of the candidate of the "Bashke Fitomje" coalition for the Municipality of Himara, Fredi Beleri, who is accused of buying and selling votes.
In a statement to the media, he called Beler's arrest an ugly event, as he said that official Athens will not tolerate the violation of the law in this case and the protection of the rights of the Greek national minority. He demands the immediate release of Freddy Beller.
"Let me open a parenthesis here and say something about an extremely unpleasant event that happened in neighboring Albania, this morning, where the candidate for mayor of Himara and member of the Greek National Minority, Fredi Beleri, was unfortunately arrested. I want to send a message to my friend from Albania. Greece will not accept the application of the rule of law and the protection of the rights of the Greek national minority. If Albania wants to get closer to the European Union, it has the obligation to ensure free elections and honest municipal council and immediately release those he has imprisoned, so that they can participate in the election process", the Prime Minister pointed out." said Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
In a post on social networks, Kyriakos Mitsotakis informs that he has informed the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, about this event.
"I informed the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, about the arrest, for the irrepressible charges, of the candidate for mayor of Himara and member of the Greek national minority, Fredi Beleri, two days before the elections. Albania must understand that Greece and the EU will not to accept concessions on the Rule of Law and the protection of the rights of the Greek National Minority." writes the Greek Prime Minister.
