The Foreign Minister of Greece, Nikos Dendias, has reacted regarding the arrest of the candidate of the 'Bashke Fitomje' coalition for the municipality of Himara, Fredi Beleri, who is accused of buying and selling votes.
He declares that if there is no evidence for his arrest, this is a scandal. Meanwhile, Dendias affirmed that this matter will be followed by Greece and that they have also notified Brussels
"A member of the Greek minority, Fredi Beleri, a candidate for mayor in Himare, Albania, was arrested, together with another Greek. I want to say that if there is no hard evidence, the arrest of a candidate for Mayor two days before the election is an absolute scandal. For this I have already informed the High Representative of the EU, Mr. Borrell, and the Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs, as acting Presidency. The Greek government will monitor this closely. I repeat, something that even the Albanian Prime Minister Rama recognized. The arrest of a candidate for Mayor two days before the elections, if there is no strong evidence, constitutes a scandal," he said.
