The Mayor of Kuçova risks his mandate, the Supreme Court: Let the CEC
Kreshnik Hajdari

The Supreme Court has rejected the appeal of Kreshnik Hajdari, mayor of Kuçova, once again leaving the fate of his mandate in the hands of the CEC.

The issue originated during the May 14 election campaign, when the candidate for the Municipality of Kuçova submitted a self-declaration form to the Central Election Commission. In it, when asked whether he had ever been convicted by a final court decision by a judicial authority in Albania or in a foreign country, Hajdari, who won the elections under the Socialist Party's banner, answered "NO".

But a few months later, the Greek judiciary confirmed that the mayor of Kuçova had been convicted, through a letter delivered by registered letter to our Ministry of Justice.

The court in Ioannina found Hajdari guilty of entering Greek territory illegally and sentenced him on June 23, 1999 with a "remedial measure of reprimand", since at that time, the elected mayor was only 17 years old. According to the decision of the Greek judiciary, the defendant Kreshnik Hajdari, at that time with worker status, was present in the court process.

The Supreme Court argues that as long as the CEC has not expressed an exhaustive decision on whether or not Mr. Hajdari is affected by the decriminalization law, then there is nothing to judge.

The CEC allowed Hajdari to run, assessing that he is not affected by the effects of decriminalization, but it was the CEC Appeals Commission, KAS, that requested that the matter be reinvestigated and the CEC come up with a decision.
