The Mayor of Tirana Erion Veliaj declared that today all students in Tirana have free transportation. In an interview with Klan News, Veliaj compared the opposition candidate's promise of free transport for all to Nastradin's story. Describing it as unfeasible in practice, Veliaj said that you cannot promise to reduce taxes and increase expenses at the same time.

"Once upon a time there was Nastradini and he had a donkey. One day he had a brilliant idea and said: What happens if I don't feed this donkey? This experiment went well for about 30 days. On the 30th day his donkey died and he couldn't understand how something that worked for him so well for 30 days, how the donkey died on the 30th day. This is at the level of a barsolete. Today there is free shipping. Students today have it for free; so for what he did for the students for free, what do you think? Didn't it occur to us to make it free for everyone? But it is unfeasible" , said Veliaj.

The head of the Municipality of Tirana explained the reasons why the promise of free transportation in the capital is unrealizable.

"First, you will get it from general taxation, which means: today 17% of people travel by bus; 83% do not travel by bus, 51% walk, 4% by bicycle and the rest by car. So you're telling someone who's using a bike, that I'm going to charge for a service that you don't get, and you're telling someone who says, take it, I walked because I only have one station. So you will get from the general taxation that those taxes are not an abstract thing. How will you subsidize only the ticket? What about bank accounts? What about those who have to pay the bus loans? A used bus costs 200-250 thousand euros today. The new one costs 500,000 euros if you want to make it electric. The 400 buses of Tirana are 100 million euros from the first day", he said.

Veliaj accused the opposition of populism while saying that even in America transportation is not free.

"What we have to understand is that for students the bus is free. This lie business in America is like those cane slides, if you take your hands off the slide it doesn't stop until you get to the bottom. So, they have given up on popularization. How did you save a person 52,000 Lek, when the general subscription for all lines is 16,000 old Lek? While the subscription for only one line is 9 thousand ALL, while students have it for free. That's how much the system can hold. So, at this stage we will become like Nastradin's donkey. We will say well, well it took us 30 days, what about then?" , declared Veliaj.
