Ditmir Bushati: Edi Rama is playing with fire

“Denying the popular anger that has taken over the streets has a high cost.” This was the message that former Socialist Foreign Minister Ditmir Bushati gave to the Italian newspaper “Il Foglio.”

In a long article from Tirana titled "The Flamingo Revolt", journalist Nicola Mirenzi has explored the reason why those who have taken to the streets are demanding the resignation of Edi Rama and the removal of the entire old political class.

He described the story as one in which the current prime minister was for many years the favorite of the West as a modern politician who was bringing his country closer to the EU. But the fact that his departure is now being sought has angered him:

"For this reason too, Edi Rama reacted to the protest with annoyance. At first he ignored it, as did many media outlets. Then he spoke of foreign interference."

Albanians, he said, were being used as “cannon fodder” in a global campaign against Trump. He then said they were victims of a retaliation by Iran, after the Albanian government had offered protection to a political group against the ayatollahs.

Until he reached the Greek track: Greece, according to him, was instigating the revolt to take away Albania's tourists.

When interviewed by the Financial Times, Rama responded to the protesters with vulgar language. “People say I’m the one in charge of all this. I tell them: ‘go to hell’ (literally: ‘go f***’). It’s as simple as that. It’s not up to me to prove that I’m not the Godfather; it’s up to them to prove that I am.”

Precisely to oppose this delusion, the Italian journalist addressed former Foreign Minister Bushati, who, according to him, commented on these positions for "Il Foglio" with surprise:

"Serious reflection and concrete political action are needed. Denying reality, mocking the protesters, arguing about their numbers, pursuing conspiracy theories while ignoring the essence of the issue – namely the popular anger that has taken over the streets – is playing with fire."

"Albania deserves more," said Ditmir Bushati.
