Greece has reacted with strong tones after the Vlora Court jailed the candidate of the opposition coalition "Bashke Fitomjem" for Himara, Fredi Beleri.

The Greek Foreign Ministry describes today's decision as scandalous if the evidence against it is not irrefutable.

The announcement also states that it will also affect Albania's relations with the European Union.

"Today's decision of the Vlora court, if the evidence is not irrefutable, is scandalous. The arrest of a candidate for Mayor two days before the elections does not constitute the rule of law. The decision to ban the candidate for Mayor brings a complete change in the rules of equality in the municipal elections in Himara, the most important center of the Greek national minority in Albania.

Such a decision will also affect the relations of the European Union with Albania, since the condition of this European path is the respect of the European rules and the principles of the rule of law by the candidate countries. Decisions like today's that violate the above principles mean that in practice Albania is not following the European path", declared the Greek Foreign Ministry.

Beleri was arrested in the early hours of Friday by order of the Prosecutor's Office of Vlora for active corruption in the elections. His arrest came 48 hours before the May 14 local elections, where the 51-year-old is running against the current mayor, Gjergji Goro, who is seeking a third term.

Fredi Beleri became part of the political debate in the middle of the week also because of a statement he made during an interview for the Greek newspaper 'Protothema', in which he mentioned a plan for the Hellenization of Himara, which he later denied.
