The British ambassador in Tirana, Alastair King-Smith, says that there is a long list of Albanian persons declared non-grata by his country. However, he reiterated that names cannot be disclosed. In an interview with News 24, the British diplomat said that among these names are not only politicians, but also businessmen, or others who are not directly connected to a political party.
"We do not specify the number of individuals when it comes to actions for disruptive immigration actions. But what I can tell you is that we have a balanced approach. This is not aimed at a group of individuals or a political party, but may include politicians. It can also include a businessman.
It may include others who are not directly affiliated with a political party. But the important thing is to focus on how these measures can help ensure accountability and end impunity for crime and corruption, but also act as a deterrent, hopefully, for the future," said the British ambassador.
"They can belong to any category. From business to politicians. There may be others. The criterion is that of those who are no longer considered useful to the public good of the British people and who are therefore no longer able to travel to the UK, " King-Smith added.
"We don't reveal names or numbers. Ours is a balanced approach to these things. This is not an approach directed at a group of people or a political party and we will continue to follow this balanced approach, not only for Albania. It is something that we are applying more broadly across the Western Balkans and globally and that will grow.
These accountability mechanisms, both in terms of crackdowns on immigration and global anti-corruption sanctions and other measures, are a strong policy of the UK government. And we hope to see more of these actions in the future," said the ambassador.
Until now, it is known that former Prime Minister Sali Berisha is on the non grata list of Great Britain. Berisha has called this decision a corrupt act involving the British ambassador, Prime Minister Rama and Mayor Veliaj.
